Bianca Mondino, Miss Markham Ontario Canada
Hello my name is Bianca Mondino and I am a national delegate representing my city, Markham, Ontario in the upcoming Miss
Canada International Scholarship Pageant. The
Miss Canada International Scholarship Pageant is very similar to the Miss
America pageant, where girls are not judged on beauty and body image, but rather on personality, intellect, public speaking,
charity involvement and community outreach. Miss Canada International is the largest scholarship achievement program in
Canada for young women between the ages of 18-26 and aims to promote higher education and community involvement. I will
be one of 40 young women vying for the title of Miss Canada International, who will essentially be the ambassador for youth
across the nation, as well as a spokesperson and mentor for young women.

As Miss Markham Ontario, I have choosen two charities  to represent and promote awareness. I have chosen to represent the
MHE Research Foundation and the Dove Self-Esteem Fund. Both of these are very close to my heart because I have been
affected by
Multiple Osteochondroma and had to undergo surgery when I was younger due to the fatigue and pain I
constantly experienced. I want to represent this foundation throughout my pageant experience and well after, because being
affected by MHE makes me want to be able to educate people about this bone disorder and understand why future research for
it is very important. Because not many people fully understand the nature of MHE, I want to be able raise awareness and hold
events in order to fundraise and gain support to help further research. My commitment to the foundation and research being
conducted today brings hope that one day a treatment / cure will be found and others will no longer need to suffer from this
very painful condition.

Also, I have chosen to represent the Dove Self-Esteem Fund because I believe many youth embrace a negative perception of
body image, due to excessive media influences. I want to work with the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty because it promotes a
more inclusive definition of beauty, as well as distributes resources that empower youth to embrace this broader definition of
beauty and free themselves from negative stereotypes.

Now a little bit about myself, I am 19 years old and I will be entering my third year as a full-time student at the University of
Toronto, St. George Campus. I am working towards attaining a degree, with a double major in Criminology and Philosophy.
After I attain my degree, I hope to either enter law school or pursue a career in criminal investigations. Aside from my education,
I currently hold a part time job and enjoy taking part in volunteer and community events.

I was selected to be one of the three 2006 Markham Fair Ambassadors and work to help promote and educate the community
about the important role of agriculture. I also enjoy getting involved with my university, where I am an Orientation Leader for
first year students. At the beginning of the school year, we organize weeklong activities to help new students become
comfortable with the new university atmosphere. Aside from volunteer work, I am very interested in health and fitness, writing
and learning about new languages and culture. I traveled to Florence, Italy last summer to study in a language institute for six
weeks and am now able to read and speak Italian at an intermediate level. Also, I am currently learning how to write and speak in
Mandarin.

I would like to hold the title of Miss Canada International because I believe that I have the ability to become a strong role model
for youth across the nation, which is essential in today’s society where our youth often lack meaningful mentors in their lives. I
would like to help youth remain focused in their lives, as well as communicate with them and motivate them to aspire to do
whatever they desire. I would love to be able to send positive messages to young women and help them have a better
understanding and perception of beauty.

I want to help them disregard all the superficial and degrading aspects the word ‘beauty’ holds, which is negatively portrayed in
the media, and replace this perception with the representation of confidence and integrity. I really want to help women live
optimistically and have them realize how important it is to take on new opportunities that come their way. Finally, I believe this
title would bring forth the opportunity to take part in new charitable events and allow me to reach out to the community and
raise awareness for the
MHE Research Foundation and Dove Self-Esteem Fund.
